GRIEF + LOSS

What is Grief?

Mayo Clinic defines grief as "a strong, sometimes overwhelming emotion for people, regardless of whether their sadness stems from the loss of a loved one or from a terminal diagnosis they or someone they loved have received. Grief is the natural reaction to loss."

What are the Different Types of Grief?

There are multiple experiences of grief. Here are a few examples:

  • Traumatic grief - a form of common grief related to sudden or unexpected loss
  • Complicated grief - when grief is prolonged and significantly impacts daily life
  • Delayed or Absent grief - absence or delayed feeling of grief after a loss often expressed as denial
  • Disenfranchised grief - when your loss may be stigmatized or disregarded by society
  • Collective grief - community level form of grief after major events
