RACIAL IDENTITY + TRAUMA

Two young adults walking in a library.

What is Racial Identity?

The National Museum of African American History and Culture on talking about race:

“The notion of race is a social construct designed to divide people into groups ranked as superior and inferior. The scientific consensus is that race, in this sense, has no biological basis – we are all one race, the human race. Racial identity, however, is very real.

Understanding how our identities and experiences have been shaped by race is vital. We are all awarded certain privileges and or disadvantages because of our race whether or not we are conscious of it.

  • Racial identity is externally imposed: “How do others perceive me?”
  • Racial identity is internally constructed: “ How do I identify myself?”

What is Racial Trauma?

According to Mental Health America, “racial trauma, or race-based traumatic stress (RBTS), refers to the mental and emotional injury caused by encounters with racial bias and ethnic discrimination, racism, and hate crimes. Any individual that has experienced an emotionally painful, sudden, and uncontrollable racist encounter is at risk of suffering from a race-based traumatic stress injury.”
